EARNESTINE D. PITTMAN

AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL BRIEF

Earnestine PittmanI am a Georgia native and except for six years, I have spent all of my life in Fulton County. I was educated in the Fulton County School and Atlanta School Systems. I graduated from Henry McNeal Turner High School with a Distinctive Diploma with Honors in 1964. I was awarded a full tuition scholarship to Spelman College and graduated in 1968 with a B.A. Degree in Mathematics. In 1974, I received a Master of Education Degree from Georgia State University.

My love for people and my dedication to public service led me to become a teacher and later a political public servant. A thirst for knowledge and the desire to broaden the minds of children and adults still remain my lifelong goals. I was given the opportunity to nurture students and to help develop their mathematical skills while enhancing their abilities to become responsible citizens and lifelong learners as a high school mathematics teacher in the Atlanta Public School System. I retired from Atlanta Public Schools in 2002.

I was elected the twenty-first Mayor of the City of East Point in 2009. I was the first female and African American female Council Member ever elected Mayor of East Point. I was first elected to public office in November 2003 as Ward C Council Member. I was re-elected to the same office in November 2007. In August 2009, I resigned my Council seat to run for Mayor. I was elected Mayor on December 6, 2009. I am East Point’s first Georgian born, African American Mayor. As the Mayor, I worked with the Council to lead East Point to a new level of growth and development by implementing the goals that were set forth during my first year as Mayor.

During my years as an elected official, I have worked to keep the residents informed through Newsletters, emails and robo calls. I believe that an informed and educated population is the best defense against tyranny and the best foundation for democracy. I have been a strong advocate for fiscal responsibility and oversight of the City’s finances; a dedicated promoter of quality of life issues- affordable housing, senior housing, viable parks and recreation facilities, home code compliance assistance for elderly and low income residents, cultural enrichment, quality educational institutions and programs ; providing residents and businesses with a safe environment; and economic development.
